Dry Needling

Dry Needling

Research has demonstrated dry needling as being an effective method of treatment for all kinds of muscular, fascial and connective tissue injuries. Essentially dry needling works in a number of different ways when dealing with pain. Firstly, it introduces local tissue damage; by being able to isolate whichever structure is causing your pain and then using a needle to irritate the area, the body and brain will then implement tissue regeneration/turnover, as well as normal inflammatory protocols that help to improve blood flow and general healing.

When treating muscle tissue, dry needling can create a contraction of the muscle itself. This manually stimulated muscle contraction increases the brain’s perception of the area; otherwise known as proprioception. Due to the brain having so many processes it needs to monitor constantly, less important routines are often put into auto-pilot, which in the case of inflammation can lead to excess pain and stiffness. This increase in proprioception results in an increased level of attention and reduction of inflammatory processes that may have gotten out of hand.

Dry needling can be safely applied to almost any area of the body, however if you’re uncomfortable with needles in general, our practitioners will be able to select another method of treatment.

Myotherapist

I have had a lot of injuries. Weird brag, I know, but with the majority of my sporting life being focussed around rock climbing and long distance running, I’ve injured just about every part of my body. This has given me both an understanding of what rehab and treatment works best, but also what it’s like to mentally go through that experience. The things I value most from my therapists is a clear description of what my problem is, what the plan is going forward and how quickly I should expect […]

Myotherapist

I grew up riding dirt bikes, I found rock climbing as the addictive sport that it is in my early 20’s and, to make matters worse, also started enjoying long distance running in my 30’s. It’s easy to say that I’ve experienced my fair share of injuries, aches and pains over the years from all of these sports. I have a personal understanding of short term and chronic pain and the effects that it has on people both physically and mentally. I apply this experience to all of my treatments […]
