Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis

Here at Rock Therapy we have help for you if you or someone you know are suffering from Osteoarthritis (OA).

If the symptoms are joint pain, stiffness, and swelling? It may be osteoarthritis. But don’t worry, you’re not alone! In fact, it is the most common type of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. The fact that OA is so common, means that in the medical world it is considered a normal part of the ageing process; so finding arthritis on an x-ray doesn’t mean you need to give up doing the things you love, just that you may need to make some changes in your lifestyle, eating and exercise based habits.

The most important thing to know when dealing with osteoarthritis is that there are things you can do to help with the pain beyond taking medications. In many cases, regular exercise can not only act as a preventative measure for the presentation of osteoarthritis, but can actually reduce its severity. For example, research has shown that the strengthening of the quadriceps muscles can lead to reduced osteoarthritic degeneration within the hip joint; arguably one of the worst affected joints when considering osteoarthritis. Ultimately, this is where we come in to the picture. Joint mobilisation, soft tissue releases and a structured exercise program may help you not only reduce the amount of pain you’re experiencing due to OA but actually improve how strong and functional the joint is for as long as possible. Your practitioner will also go through dietary changes you can make to minimise the amount of inflammation being introduced to the body as well as other lifestyle changes that may be contributing to your pain.

So don’t let osteoarthritis (or the potential of it) get you down! There are many ways to manage the symptoms, reduce the progress and improve your quality of life. These include:

  • Maintaing a healthy weight
  • Eating a well balanced diet to help reduce general inflammation
  • Exercise regularly to help reduce pain, improve joint mobility and reduce stress

So don’t let osteoarthritis control your life! With the right management, you can live a happy, healthy and active life despite this condition.
