What exercise should I be doing?

Should I be exercising?

Short answer; yes. Any exercise is better than none. The key is finding something you enjoy that doesn’t make your joints hurt. This is what we like to call ‘good pain’. Soreness in the muscles, that disappears after 1 or 2 days. I hate to say it, but this is usually at its worst when you firstΒ start exercising. If you can push through that initial muscle soreness, you will be able to train regularly without experiencing it as much.

Research tells us that the minimum amount of activity per week required for healthy living is 150 minutes. This is activity that increases the heart rate to at least zone 2 (able to exercise with challenge, but still able to maintain a conversation).

Which type of exercise is best?

Exercise that motivates you! The key to healthy exercise and living is consistency, and doing something you find fun generally means you’re more likely to do it. Ideally, we suggest for people to choose an activity that lands you outdoors. This gives us a nice 2 for 1! You’re exercising AND getting vitamin D into the body which is key for a healthy immune system and general wellbeing. This could be something as simple as walking (yourself or the puppy!) or playing an outdoor sport.

There are exercises that are better than others when it comes to building strength of muscles and bones!

Bone and joint health

Osteopenia and osteoporosis are quite common. Luckily, one of the best things for these conditions is exercising. Specifically, weight bearing and impact exercise. This means it’s time to hit the gym! Weight lifting is a fantastic way of building healthy muscles, joints and bones. Keep in mind though, it’s important to give weights training the respect it deserves, so it’s best to get some personal training if you’ve never been to the gym before!

You can find our clinic inside The Wild Movement gym!. These guys are really focussed on making sure their members get the most out of their sessions and being safe whilst doing it. We work very closely with these guys, making sure that any issues they run into whilst training can be fixed as quickly as possible. Is Rock Climbing Good Exercise?

Rock climbing is the BEST exercise! (not biased at all).
Climbing is very functional, this you use all your joints, challenge your balance and work muscles in achallenging way. You’re also never too young or old to start; if you can grab a hold, you can rock climb! We have patient’s who have started climbing in their 70’s! The community within rock climbing is one of the best as well. Helping each other figure out climbs, cheering each other on; this is iconic climbing culture. You may have seen it at the olympics! Even when preparing for climbs in a competitive scenario, climbers give each other tips and discuss how they will approach the climbs πŸ™‚
