Fall Safely When Climbing: Why, How and When?
Safe falling in rock climbing is more than just a crucial skill to mitigate injury — it’s freedom. Learning how to fall safely lets you climb with confidence, push your limits, and enjoy every moment on the wall. In this post, we explore the techniques to fall correctly, and how to apply them.
Maintain Awareness Before, During and After Your Fall
Awareness is key to a safe fall when rock climbing. Before starting the climb, take note of the available holds and crash pad placement. Ideally you’ll want to down climb as much as possible to minimise the impact of your fall, so spend a little time mentally mapping out what holds or features you might use so you’re not improvising when you’re already pumped and about to fall.
If you anticipate you might fall, keep an eye on where you expect to fall to ensure you’re aiming for the safest landing spot. Avoid landing on the edges or where pads might overlap and keep an eye out for any objects or people passing through that you could fall on.
If you’re doing a tricky move, it can help to practice an intentional fall to determine where you’re likely to land, how your body will be positioned and what the fall might feel like.
Position Your Body To Fall Safely
Poor body positioning during a fall can cause serious injuries. Aim to land on your feet with knees softly bent, after your feet absorb the initial impact, roll onto your side or back to disperse the remaining force. Think of it like a “ninja roll” to protect your joints and spine. Remember to keep your chin tucked to avoid whiplash and avoid reaching out with your arms to break the fall, as this can lead to fractures.
Stay Relaxed
When climbing, if you tense up out of fear, it can disrupt your movement and judgment. Likewise, stiff muscles are harder to control, which can lead to awkward or unsafe falls.
It can be challenging to manage tension in the body, especially when heights and risks are involved, but how climbers manage their mindset can make all the difference in both their performance and safety.
Developing a calm, relaxed and focused climbing mindset involves:
- Controlled Breathing: Practicing steady, deep breaths can help calm the mind and prevent tension in the body.
- Visualization: Climbers often rehearse routes mentally, visualizing moves and strategies to build confidence.
- Focus on the Present: Fear often stems from “what ifs”—instead, focus on the immediate challenge, like the next hold.
- Regular Exposure: Gradually tackling tougher climbs builds familiarity and reduces fear over time, turning it into respect for the challenge rather than paralyzing anxiety.
Practice Falling Safely
Practicing regularly in a controlled environment will help you fall instinctively and protect yourself when the real thing happens.
Here are some tips to help you practice:
- Start Low: Begin practicing falls from lower heights to build confidence and refine your technique. Gradually increase the height as you get more comfortable.
- Use Quality Crash Pads: Make sure you have enough crash pads to cover your landing area completely, and that they’re securely positioned without gaps.
- Work with a Spotter: If available, have a spotter guide your fall to ensure you don’t veer off the pads. They can also provide feedback on your technique.
- Simulate Real Scenarios: Practice falling mid-move or when reaching for a difficult hold. This better prepares you for unexpected falls.
- Relax and Breathe: One of the hardest parts of falling is staying relaxed. Practice staying calm and breathing through the fall to avoid panicking.
- Learn from Experienced Climbers: Watching skilled climbers fall safely or asking for tips can give you valuable insights and build your confidence.
